Remembering the past is a PRIVILEGE

Texas and the Mexican American Experience
The Texas Hispanic Portal A Project of the Official Texas Hispanic Caucus of Texas
The mission of this portal is to present visitors with research and historical records of the experiences of Americans of Mexican descent since the birth of our people. Our culture thrives on either side of the border, yet not without tragedy. The experiences of Americans of color has been oppressive, tragic, and nonlinear, as even our identity has been stripped, redefined, villified and nullified. Historically, even speaking our language of Spanish was grounds for punishment. The Repatriation of the 1920s forced thousands of Americans of Mexican descent into a country that was never their home. Born on American soil did not provide protection or advantages. Today, that reality continues to plague us. The images presented here were created and collected by the Esperanza Center, some are murals along Guadalupe Street. The people of the west side celebrate their culture, and their legacies, their triumphs and their tragedies. They will overcome.
Welcome to the Texas Hispanic Portal
The history of Texas is unique in its beginnings. The only U.S. state to be its own country sets it apart from the other states. But it also has a tragic history in its dealings with the Mexican people, Americans of Mexican heritage, and Tejanos after the ratification of the Treaty of Guadalupe - Hidalgo. You will find on this site a collection of documents, articles, stories of the people who resolved to endure the many hardships for equality. Some of these stories you may not have heard before. They may shock you, disgust you, but do not
